As a matter
of fact, not all shipping containers are created equal. You have several types
from which to choose, each with different characteristics and costs. Grabbing a
container and calling it a day won’t take you very far, as you still need the
know-how and amendments to transform the container from a cargo carrier to your
sweet Shipping Container House.

Nowadays,
there are more than 50 different types of shipping containers available in the
market, although not all would be ideal as the foundation of a home.

Some of the
more common types of containers you may run across in your research include:

1. Open-top
containers: These containers have an open top for easy loading of difficult
materials such as grain or coal. The side of the container can also be opened
for even greater ease of transporting, particularly for tall or heavy materials.

2. Dry
freight containers: Also called cube containers, these containers open in the
front only. The rest of the container is entirely enclosed, ideal for general
shipping needs.

3.
Insulated or thermal containers: Materials and goods that are frozen, chilled
or otherwise sensitive to temperature can be shipped in these containers, which
are insulated to keep constant temperature.

4.
Refrigeration containers: Also known as reefers or reefer shipping containers,
these temperature-controlled containers have a built-in refrigeration unit
necessary for shipping perishable items.

5. Tank
containers: While they have the same dimensions as other shipping containers,
tank containers are cylindrical and mounted on a rectangular steel base. They
are generally used to ship liquid or bulk materials.

Despite
their differences in purpose or characteristics, all shipping containers have
dimensions regulated by the ISO.

1. Height:
Standard containers are 8 feet, 6 inches in height, although other containers
can range from 4 feet to more than 9 feet, 6 inches high.

2. Width:
Most containers are 8 feet wide, although some are wider.

3. Length:
The most common lengths are either 20 or 40 feet, but you can find those that
range up to 56 feet long.
